What size play mat do you need? Planning 150 × 200 cm in a Singapore living room

"Will it fit?" is the first question most parents ask about a large play mat. Here is how to answer it for your own floor in ten minutes.

what a baby actually uses.

A baby doing tummy time needs about the length of their body in every direction to roll and reach. A crawler needs a runway. A toddler needs room for a parent to sit alongside, with a few blocks, a book, a tower that falls over. The mat should hold all three stages, because you will not replace it every six months.

the tape test.

1. Mark 150 × 200 cm on your floor with masking tape.
2. Leave at least a walkway on the side people pass through, usually the route from the front door to the kitchen.
3. Check the sofa can still be sat on without feet landing on the mat's edge, or decide you like them landing there.
4. Open any balcony or bedroom door that swings over the area.

If the tape fits, the mat fits.

• In front of the sofa. The long side runs parallel to the sofa. The mat becomes the room's rug and the sofa becomes the grown ups' seat for floor time.
• By the balcony door. Morning light, and the mat is out of the main walkway. Good for tummy time.
• Across a corner. Two walls hold the mat in place and the rest of the floor stays clear.
